Gerard Rutgers Hardenbergh (American 1856 – 1915)

Known as a Jersey Shore painter, Hardenbergh was the great, great-grandson of the first president of Rutgers University (New Jersey). His specialty was painting birds in their natural habitat, but is known also for paintings of fishing scenes, landscapes and still-lifes. He lived on a houseboat in Scow Ditch, Bay Head, New Jersey, for a time, where he painted the local environs. Hardenbergh exhibited his works at the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition, St. Louis World’s Fair-1904, Brooklyn Art Association, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
